Experiência fantástica: Laya is for everyone and it has been my second home since I moved to Portugal 2 years ago. The atmosphere is great, classes can be taught either in Portuguese or English and you can find any class that suits you from Yoga and Pilates to Aerial classes! Also, Laya has a brand new Massage Room and your body will be in great hands with lovely Alice. She is a masseur therapist and UK nurse who will read your body and treat you for exactly what you need. Totally bespoke! Highly recommend - what else can I say!!!?

Experiência negativa: I went there (quite a while now)... to ask for info. There was a huge silence as apparently men's presence (?) is frown upon. Or at least they completly hid the enthusiasm of receiving a noob. Anyway... Something is off... Don't leave this place... run from it.

Experiência fantástica: I used to go to Irene’s classes at 08:00 on Mondays and Wednesdays and it is truly the best start of the day. I felt that my strength, balance, flexibility and posture were improving after almost every session and my breath work also got better and better. I really recommend Laya Studio.

Experiência fantástica: I went for 5 days and stayed for 10! It was an amazing opportunity to experience many different styles of yoga with truly phenomenal instructors. I can't say enough great things about them. And you can join in on as many or as few as your body wants. And with the freedom and flexibility (pun intended ;) you have the ability to see all the beauty that surrounds the area. The rooms were spotless, the staff all friendly and massages were Incredible!! From day one you were welcomed in like you were an old friend. I would highly recommend this retreat. To the team at Laya Studios, I'll be seeing you again one day.

Experiência negativa: The first instructor I had at Laya was amazing, incredible. Máxima was her name. She has the most perfect vibe and is a truly wonderful human being, and amazing instructor. But Máxima seems to have left Laya, and I'm afraid that my experience radically changed after that. This one Saturday I was, for the first time ever, late five minutes, because the downstairs door was locked (which wasn't habit) and there was no one there to open it for me. In years of doing yoga this was the very first time that I was late. I thought to myself that I didn't like that I was five minutes late at all, but then again it wasn't my fault, the door was locked. Plus I had always seen the instructors not even being fazed by it when every other customer did it, every single Saturday; so I relaxed and made my way up the stairs. Was totally shocked, nonetheless, when the instructor all of a sudden took to admonishing me in front of the group, in such a rude, condescending, humiliating, aggressive tone that it actually took me a good while to process it. I had noticed about this new instructor that she had a very dense vibe, and was really not happy that the instructor had changed with no notice to anyone. But I kept showing up hoping that Máxima would return, until this day, where I was basically humiliated and admonished with such disrespect, as in when someone tells off a child. I know that I look younger than I am, but I am a 43 year old woman, and a paying costumer, and one who had never before been late, "where are your manners and professionalism?" I felt like asking. But instead, once what had just happened to me really sunk in, I just rolled back my mat and left. I stay home now, have my yoga mat and a living room, can do it at home. All it took was one bad experience for me to never show up again. I complained to the owner of the place. I left obviously because that totally killed the vibe. No one goes to a yoga lesson to become upset, to be mistreated; it's quite the opposite of that what one aims at getting from a yoga session. And as such I lost my money, so I had to complain. I think that the owner may have said something about giving me a free session after that, but she also tried to make up excuses for the instructor for a split second, which is when I went like NO! Politely ended the call and never set foot in the place again; and it's a real shame both because of the wonderful experience that I had had prior with Máxima, but also because this place was only a few steps away from where I was living at the time. I am Portuguese btw, but have by now lived most of my life abroad, so you'll excuse me if I can express myself better in English at this point. I don't remember the name of the rude instructor, and in a way it's better that I don't. I don't usually remember the names of people with whom I have had a bad experience, only the names of those that are kind; my brain automatically does this natural selection I think. Also my goal in sharing this is not to get anyone fired or singled out, because I don't do onto others what they have done to me. My goal is to share my experience so other paying customers are aware of this, and because what happened to me was tremendously unfair and should be known. I am used to being treated differently, and to having some people think that they can speak to me any kind of way in my own country. I am used to the random condescending treatment and the infantilization. That's not new to me, but so many years into the last time that I had actually lived in Portugal, I really thought and hoped, for some reason, that things were a little different for people who look like me, and that some people had evolved a little. I was wrong and sadly disappointed to find out that this wasn't the case, this one fine week at Laya; when on a fine Saturday morning I went to my usual group morning yoga session, to find my bliss and connect as per usual, only this time to get reacquainted with a very well known, yet long forgotten, shadow, the shadow of ignorance.
